Comparison of Levels and Sources of Lead in Modern and Ancient Soils in Low Volga Steppes

چکیده
Concentrations and isotopic compositions of lead in the total and mobile (acid-soluble and carbonatebound) forms were determined in remote and roadside Chestnut soils in the dry steppe region of Low Volga, Russia. As a reference to evaluate the level of modern soil contamination with lead, we used ancient soil buried under a Bronze Age kurgan about 4500 years ago. In comparison with buried soil, the roadside modern soils showed clear signs of anthropogenic influence such as elevated total and mobile Pb concentrations and fractions of the mobile forms in the total pool of Pb, higher ratios of Pb/Ti and Pb/Sc, and a shift of Pb isotopic compositions towards the less radiogenic signatures found in modern Russian aerosols and gasoline. In the remote modern soils, however, these signs of anthropogenic influence were much less pronounced and could be observed only in the mobile fractions of Pb, but were practically undetectable in terms of concentrations and isotopic compositions of total lead.

متن کاملEstimation of Soil Carbon Sequestration Rate in Steppes (Case Study: Saveh Rudshur Steppes)
Since Renaissance, the natural ecosystems have fallen into a complete state ofdisarray due to the rise in the amount of carbon dioxide. Soil, the unsparing stuff, is one of themajor sources of carbon storage, and plays a paramount role in the global equilibrium ofcarbon as well as carbon sequestration. Given that Iran is benefiting from vast steppes, therate of carbon sequestration in them dese...
متن کاملAncient DNA from Human and Animal
Research on ancient DNA (aDNA) has the potential to enable molecular biologists and archeologists to decipher certain aspects of history by direct looking into the past. However, several major problems in this field limit the applicability of aDNA studies, most importantly contamination with modern DNA and postmortem DNA degradation. In this study we extracted and analyzed aDNA obtained from ~3...

The decrease in the level of industrial production and the significant reduction of highly toxic substances used in the agriculture of the Volga region in the last decade did not maintain the expected decrease of pollution level in the Volga water. Concentration of many polluting substances in water continues to remain high. Among the numerous polluting substances in the Volga River two groups ...
متن کاملMapping and risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultural soils of the Siakh Darengoun Region, Shiraz, Iran
Four heavy metals were measured in forty-nine topsoil samples collected fromagricultural areas in Siakh-Darengoun, Iran. The goals were to investigate soil spatialdistribution patterns of metals; their potential ecological risk; and sources. The Hakansonpotential ecological risk index and index of geo-accumulation (Igeo) were used forevaluating t...
